Johanna Kotlaris

Nominee 2022

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Anima, 2022

Johanna Kotlaris, personifying Death, guides the audience through the spaces of the Kunstmuseum Luzern and attempts to empathise with and appropriate human life. The character draws the audience into a confrontation with loss, new beginnings, change, and the inevitability of endings: how are the cycles of becoming and passing structured? To what extent can we influence and shape the events of our lives? And what’s the deal with the myth of immortality? The reflection of the role of Death combined with text fragments from stories about dying and new beginnings isaccompanied by singing, sound, and sequences of movement to form a contemporary dance of death. Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Anima, specifically created for the Swiss Performance Art Award, was developed in collaboration with the performers Hannah Mehler and Marie Popall.
