Joseph Baan

Finalist 2023

BIOWn, 2023
In collaboration with Luc Häfliger

In BlOWn Joseph Baan and Luc Häfliger harness unrecognizability, illegibility, and incoherence as strategies to question and potentially abolish the constraints one is borne into: Which attributions and categorisations determine identity? Which roles and stereotypes do we perform? Which behaviours and bodily grammars are deemed legible and acceptable? In response to these questions Baan and Häfliger develop sequences of action and movement that might appear ambiguous, inscrutable, or contradictory. Giving embodied form to and staging unruliness, Baan and Häfliger reflect the complexity and diversity of social realities. Training one’s own incoherence serves as an empowering and liberating tool for moving beyond normative thinking and conceiving new stories, forms of relationships, and visions of living together.
