Lara Dâmaso

Nominee 2021

«exercise in random laments», 2021

Just as the body itself is subjected to normative beliefs, the voice has also been tamed, having lost its primal function as an instrument of direct communication. The female voice, abased by masculine criteria, has been stereotyped as the shrill cries of a wild and furious shrew and derided as the irrational utterances of an amoral hysteric in need of cultivation. In this performance, the artist investigates the relative physicality of voice: how movement, posture, or breathing may change its tenor, and how voice becomes a medium independent of sound space. To this end, Dâmaso expresses the full potential of the hitherto suppressed female voice.
